A Journey Between Luxury, History and Mystery
A short drive through the typical Ragusa countryside, characterized by dry stone walls, olive and carob trees, and herds of grazing cows and sheep, leads to the magnificent Donnafugata Castle. This splendid mansion, whose original core dates back to the 14th century, initially consisted of a simple little house and a watchtower. In 1860, Baron Corrado Arezzo, a senator of the Kingdom, radically transformed the structure, giving it its present appearance.
A Dive into the Past
Upon arrival, the beauty of the castle and the breathtaking views leave you breathless. The atmosphere here is unique: the castle seems suspended in time, between a literati’s residence and a majestic aristocratic estate. A wide staircase leads to the second floor, with three floors in total and 122 rooms, about 20 of which can be visited. In the Hall of Mirrors, one can almost imagine being at the Palace of Versailles, reliving 19th-century atmospheres of waltzes, quadrilles, elegant gowns and sumptuous imperial buffets. Each room recounts the last years of the Sicilian aristocracy, with readings, concerts, political meetings and diplomatic agreements.
A Historic House Full of Curiosities
The original furniture, embroidered curtains, rare pianos, and the bishop’s bronze and tortoiseshell bed testify to the ties between nobility and clergy. Wallpapers with magnificent trompe-l’œil effects and 750 blazons of Sicilian noble families are details that enrich the visit. Baron Arezzo, a man of great culture and intelligence, had a lively and prankish taste, reflected in the castle grounds with its many jokes. Among rare trees and shrubs are sprinklers hidden in seats, a mock Chapel with an automaton dressed as a monk, fake coffins, and a maze of white stone walls once covered with fragrant climbing roses.
